Through funding from the Chicago Public Education Fund, the Center for Urban Education Leadership (CUEL) is currently enacting and testing a leader learning design (called the Malott Fellows program) for Chicago Public School (CPS) principals who are leading the District’s Priority Schools. CUEL is collaborating with Chicago-based WISE Leadership Consulting in this effort. The inaugural class of 22 CPS Malott Principal Fellows began to engage in monthly Principal Learning Labs and individualized, high-dose leadership coaching at the start of the 2023-2024 school year.

During monthly Learning Labs, Malott Fellows gain an opportunity to sharpen their ability to communicate their leadership stories to others. A distinct difference in telling our leadership story is the inclusion of our unique way of defining ourselves. This may include sharing some of our personal childhood family history and how it influences our leadership. Principal Sherri Walker of Harold Washington Elementary school, shared her leadership story at a recent Malott Fellows Principal Learning Lab.  Principal Walker is in her 8th year as principal. She told us her leadership story by explaining who she is and how her identity shows up through her leadership. Her leadership story included her family history:

  • I am the Great Granddaughter of Slaves
  • I am the Granddaughter of  Sharecroppers
  • I am the daughter of the Great Migration
  • I am First Generation College Education
