Through funding from the Chicago Public Education Fund, the Center for Urban Education Leadership (CUEL) is currently enacting and testing a leader learning design (called the Malott Fellows program) for Chicago Public School (CPS) principals who are leading the District’s Priority Schools. CUEL is collaborating with Chicago-based WISE Leadership Consulting in this effort. The inaugural class of 22 CPS Malott Principal Fellows began to engage in monthly Principal Learning Labs and individualized, high-dose leadership coaching at the start of the 2023-2024 school year.

During monthly Learning Labs, Malott Fellows have examined their school-level data to understand levels of CA and to identify students who are CA or at-risk of becoming CA.  Learning labs have allowed Fellows to learn about the kinds of root causes that are typical to CA and how root causes to CA can be explored. Over the last several learning labs, three Malott Fellows have presented their work to diagnose and act upon CA in their schools including Dr. Chris Graves (Principal at Jordan Elementary Community School), Dr. Margaret Bryne (Principal at Northwest Middle School), and Mr. Rafael Jimenez (Principal at Edward E. Sadlowski Elementary School) have each shared their school’s CA work during learning labs.  A group of Malott Fellows will also be featured on a forthcoming national podcast to showcase their efforts and accomplishments.
