In recent years, 70% of Illinois school districts have spent a total of $50 million annually on large-scale “interim” testing to support teaching and learning.  In this brief, Zavitkovsky reviews the track record of large-scale interims tests and wonders whether pandemic disruptions, a decade of dismal return on investment and growing demands for instructional equity might finally start turning the tide on the continuing popularity of commercial interim systems.
