Marie Tejero Hughes

Marie Tejero Hughes is a Professor of Special Education and a Faculty Fellow in the Honors College.
She is the Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of Special Education and the Program Coordinator for the Special Education PhD program. Dr. Tejero Hughes primarily teaches graduate courses in literacy designed for general and special education teachers working in urban communities. Her areas of expertise include comprehension instruction for students struggling with reading, reading instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse students, and Latino family engagement in education.

Research & Teaching Interests
Marie Tejero Hughes focuses her research on enhancing teachers' instruction of reading across the curriculum, supporting the literacy needs of students with learning disabilities, and involving Latino families in the education process. She teaches graduate courses in literacy designed to assist general and special education teachers working in urban communities meet the needs of students struggling with literacy.
